Winning Gloves, Winning Spirit, Winning Daniel Cormier
A fighter’s hands are arguably their most important assets. Whether it’s with combinations, defensive moves, or one punch knock outs, these are the tools that bring them victory in the cage. When training, it is important to know what kind of gloves to use, what size, and what brand.
The UFC gloves are 4 ounce gloves that aim to stay true to the no-holds barred bare-knuckle roots of the sport. However when sparring and doing bag work in the gym, it’s not always a good idea to use 4 ounce gloves. The hands need more protection and padding when training and working out. Over a longer period of time, the hands can risk damage if the appropriate protection isn’t used.
Usually the size of glove used correlates with the weight of the fighter. Fighters that are 120 pounds or lower should use 12-14 ounce gloves. 150 pound fighters should use 16 to 20 ounce gloves. Fighters at 180 pounds or above should use gloves that are 18 ounces or higher. When sparring, it’s a good idea to use gloves that have a little extra padding to ensure that you’re not hurting your sparring partner. It is often recommended that 16 ounce gloves are used unless you’re a Mark Hunt, Brock Lesnar size of heavyweight. Also make sure to take notice what size gloves your sparring partner is using. You don’t want to be getting into a training session with an opponent who is wearing 10 ounce gloves or less with something to prove. There is a real chance you can get hurt. Every hit the chin and the brain takes counts!
Brands of boxing gloves are also different. Every brand distributes weight across the glove a little differently. Some brands focus on protecting the hands, while other brands focus on protecting the wrists. There are tried and true brands like Ring, Grant, and Rival.
What type of boxing gloves should you consider then? Well consider the ones that current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier use, the Winning boxing gloves by Kozuji. Daniel Cormier entered MMA as an Olympic wrestler, but he quickly showed the fight world that he wasn’t going to rely only on his wrestling abilities. He burst on to the scene in Strikeforce and knocked out his first three opponents. Daniel Cormier became famous as a heavyweight fighter when he knocked out Antonio Big Foot Silva in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament. Since then, Daniel Cormier has successfully combined his striking and wrestling to become the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Daniel Cormier isn’t the only one that uses these gloves. Winning boxing gloves are also famously worn by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. Two of the greatest names in boxing.
Kozuji not only makes the Winning boxing gloves, but they make a plethora or combat training equipment. They have everything from hand wraps and bandages to groin protection to focus mitts and focus sticks and even head gear. They are also the brand that makes the gloves for Shooto!
