Cain Velasquez is a fighter that has amazed fight critics and fight fans ever since he burst on to the professional MMA scene in 2006. His conditioning and his power are at such an intensely high level that he consistently baffles fight fans as well as opponents. These two keys to victory are so incredible that they were subjects of an episode of Sport Science.
In 2008, just after two professional fights, Cain entered the UFC and just kept winning. The first time I noticed him was his fight against Cheick Kongo at UFC 99. This was when Cheick Kongo, a former kick boxing champion, was on a three fight winning streak. He met Cain after knocking out three opponents in a row. I sincerely thought Cain would be cattle for the predator. Cain used his wrestling and stopped Cheick Kongo’s winning streak cold.
Cain’s next opponent was Ben Rothwell. Ben had a 12 fight win streak in the IFL and was brought into the UFC heavyweight division as a knockout artist. Cain ended up stopping Ben in the second round via TKO.
When watching Cain fight, it was like watching an unstoppable train. 250 pounds of pure power, developed from thousands and thousands of hours on the wrestling mat. There seemed like nothing his opponents could do, despite their best efforts. After the Ben Rothwell fight, Cain was already being considered a threat to Brock Lesnar’s UFC Heavyweight Championship Belt. Cain’s last test was a fight against MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
At Cain Velasquez vs Big Nog started, I almost felt sorry for Nogueira. I am a huge Nogueira fan and respected him for everything he accomplished during Pride and everything he has done and is doing for the sport of BJJ and MMA. But when you watch Cain fight, you know that Cain is something different, something special, and it is inevitable that he will be the champion. Cain knocked out Big Nog in the first round.
Cain then went on to win the Heavyweight Championship from Brock Lesnar and be the first person to beat Brock via TKO. Cain then lost the belt to Junior Dos Santos via KO resulting from an arguably fluke overhand punch.
Antonio Big Foot Silva was the former Elite XC Heavyweight Champion. He is an absolute monster of a man and a dangerous fighter standing up and on the ground. He is also credited as the second person to defeat the undefeatable Fedor Emelianenko. Big Foot Silva is a black belt in Shotokan Karate, Judo, and BJJ. He currently trains out of American Top Team. Going into Cain Velasquez vs Big Foot Silva 1, he recently moved from Strikeforce to the UFC. Going into Cain Velasquez vs Big Foot Silva 2, he was building a case for himself as a championship belt contender with back to back KO victories of Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem.
Cain Velasquez vs Big Foot Silva 1 is Cain’s first fight after losing the belt. He is on an absolute war path to get the belt back and to show the fight world that he is the rightful heavyweight champion, that Junior Dos Santos got lucky, and he was the most dangerous man in the world.
In the fight, Cain brought out his animal side and won via TKO in the first round. This is the fight where Cain took Big Foot down smashed opened his nose and proceeded to ground and pound his way to a 2 minute victory. Nobody wants the belt as bad as Cain Velasquez.
Cain Velasquez vs Big Foot Silva 2 comes after Cain defeated Junior Dos Santos and won back the UFC Heavyweight Championship. He granted Big Foot a rematch to prove that he didn’t get lucky the first time around. In the second meeting, Cain Velasquez catches Big Foot with a well timed right cross. The giant stumbles to the ground where Cain leverages his powerful wrestling base to control the BJJ black belt, take his back, and ground and pound his way to a first round victory again.
Cain Velasquez vs Big Foot Silva 1 and 2 are phenomenal fights that show you just how incredible and powerful a fighter Cain is.
