Carla Esparza vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk, UFC 185, March 2015

Carla Esparza vs Joanna JedrzejczykI have to admit, I was one of the doubters. I did not believe. I thought that Carla Esparza was one was going to establish a strong take down game and implement a lay and pray strategy to win.

Why didn’t I listen to the fact that Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a 6 time Muay Thai world champion? Why didn’t I listen to the history, where world class strikers have taken out college wrestlers. Why didn’t I listen to Joanna!

Self pity, self imposed guilt, and self deprecation aside. Carla Esparza vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the UFC Straw-weight Championships was an awesomely violent fight.

I always love watching Muay Thai striking in the cage and Joanna Jedrzejczyk is no exception. Perfect jabs, violent elbows, unbelievably powerful striking – especially coming from a 115 pound fighter. Oh and by the way, phenomenal take down defense against a decorated wrestler. Of course, hats off and a standing ovation for Carla Esparza’s heart – not giving up after not being able to take Joanna down and being on the receiving end of those Muay Thai Champion level elbows and combos.

Moment of the fight? The last 50 seconds of round 2. This marked the beginning of the end. Joanna catches Carla with a powerful powerful right, Carla is a little dazed from the punch. Joanna sees this and immediately capitalizes on the moment and goes in the for the kill. Joanna pushes Carla’s face with her left, Carla loses balance and falls back onto the cage fence. Joanna immediately closes the distance and follows up with a right elbow that Carla blocks. The look on Carlas face says it all. Joanna ends the fight with the meanest flurry of punches ever. omg.
