I’m not a fan but damned, she’s good.
At this point it has become absolutely cliche to sing praises about Ronda Rousey. Her ability, her skill, her finish streak, the amount of time it takes to dispatch opponents. Even if you didn’t know anything about fighting, you’d know about Ronda Rousey. It is almost unfashionable to talk about how great Ronda is. From the moment she stepped into the cage, she was the embodiment of greatness few fighters or people could ever reach. And that was back in 2011. She is so consistent that she could very well be the greatest ever. But talking about Ronda being the greatest? Ugh. Please. So boring.
If you can’t tell already, I’m not a Ronda Rousey fan. In fact I find her fights annoying. What makes a fight great, what makes a fighter great, is the amount of skill, heart, and passion they show in the cage. Usually MMA legends make it to the Hall of Fame because they battled through bloody wars where both fighters are damaged and tired. One of the fighters possesses the right combination of skill and heart and reaches deep into the pit of his soul and some how finds the shred of light that allows them to emerge the victor. Ronda Rousey fights don’t even last long enough for her to break a sweat.
Who is Bethe Correira: A look at the woman who has challenged and is beating Ronda Rousey’s Four Horsewomen
In the cage, it can be argued that women are more ferocious, more intense, and display equal or more technical ability and heart. But one thing that I find lacking in women’s MMA is a good rivalry. The only big rivalry that comes to mind is Meisha Tate vs Ronda Rousey.
But wait a minute. Bethe Correira has embarked on a not-so-subtle campaign for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship in announcing that she wants to take down each and every member of the Four Horsewomen.
Who are the Four Horsewomen? They include Ronda Rousey, Marina Shafir, Shayna Baszler, and Jessamyn Duke. An awesome group of female fighters formed after season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter where Ronda Rousey was one of the coaches.
But who cares!
We have Bethe Correira! A relative unknown on the international MMA stage, she has 9 professional fights, 3 in the UFC. And she is calling out four fighters at the same time! Bethe Correira is awesome for her confidence in her abilities and her strategy to challenge for the belt. What makes Bethe Correira even more awesome is her ability to follow through as she has currently defeated 2 out of 4 of the Horsewomen.
But who is Bethe Correira? Who is this incredible angel of MMA, gliding through the electro-shock therapy room doors, batting her eyes, pumping her gloves, and breathing life into women’s MMA.
