Neil Magny vs Hector Lombard, UFC Fight Night Mir vs Hunt, 20 March 2016
At first glance, fight fans may immediately start feeling sorry for Neil Magny to have drawn this match up. Neil a tall, thin, and lanky fighter facing a muscle stacked Judo Olympian in Hector Lombard. Conclusions are drawn and minds are made up. Then again, you never know what will happen on any given night under the lights in the cage.
Nate Diaz vs Conor McGregor, UFC 196, 5 March 2016
The benefit of having a monopoly-like promotion in the fight world like the UFC is that most if not all the best MMA fighters in the world are under one roof. The UFC has the ability to give us fantastic match-ups that are not only fun for the fans but phenomenal for the sport.
One such special fight is Nate Diaz vs Conor McGregor. Conor one of the promotions fastest rising stars with legitimate skill to back it up. He has cut through the entire featherweight division on a rampage. But now he meets Nate Diaz, one of the fight world’s favourite rebellious sons with a multitude of fight of the night, submission of the night, and knockout of the night bonuses.
Nobody knows who will win the fight, but what is certain is that it’s going to be an awesome fight to watch.
Johny Hendricks vs Stephen Thompson, UFC Fight Night, 6 February 2016
Performance of the Night
Precision, accuracy, control, distance. These are thing that make Stephen Thompson one of the most dangerous fighters in the UFC. He doesn’t rely on brawling, he doesn’t rely on aggression, he doesn’t rely on power. Stephen is all about controlling the distance, watching for openings, and then coming in with deadly and destructive strikes.
TJ Dillashaw vs Dominick Cruz, UFC Fight Night, 17 January 2016
Fight of the Night
TJ Dillashaw vs Dominick Cruz is finally here. One of my most highly anticipated fights this year. Two kings of footwork and movement. Both winning their belts and establishing their names in MMA with awkward strikes and unexpected angles. Dominick Cruz, the one that paved the way, versus TJ Dillashaw, the one that learned and improved on.
This is the kind of fight that didn’t just capture my attention, but captured my entire consciousness from beginning to end. I might have even forgot to breath as my brain melted into the screen – that’s how grossly engrossed I became.
Robbie Lawler vs Carlos Condit, UFC 195, 2 January 2016
Fight of the Night
I often wonder what makes a good fight. One that is worthy of fight fans appreciation. One that is worthy of fight of the year accolades. There may not be a set list of requirements, but it often involves skilled fighters who are willing to leave it all in the ring. We have just that with Robbie Lawler vs Carlos Condit.
Carlos Condit is a crafty and intelligent fighter who uses awkward angles to execute deadly and insistent combinations. Robbie Lawler is a durable veteran who has the patience and the chin to weather the combinations in order to deliver powerful combinations of his own.
A phenomenal fight that is receiving “fight of the year” for 2016 mentions already. Whether you are a fight fan or not, do not miss Robbie Lawler vs Carlos Condit, scroll to the bottom of this entry for the full fight video.
Dustin Poirier vs Joseph Duffy, UFC 195, 2 January 2016
The long awaited debut of Joseph Duffy into the upper ranks of the UFC Lightweight division pitted him against Dustin Poirier who is making his return to the 155lb division. Joseph Duffy originally promoted himself as the only person in the UFC that has beaten Conor McGregor, and the only person that can beat him again.
Dustin Poirier vs Joseph Duffy was an exciting and bloody battle. An absolutely amazing fight to watch between two crafty, skilled, and tough fighters. In this fight, Dustin also exposed a few weaknesses in Joseph Duffy’s fight game. Joseph may not get that fight with Conor McGregor as soon as he would have liked.
Carlos Condit vs Johny Hendricks, UFC 158, 16 March 2013
Fight of the Night
As if the excitement wasn’t enough simply having two of the best welterweight fighters meet. Carlos Condit vs Johny Hendricks will determine who gets the next title shot. And to add another layer of excitement, this fight is the co-main event to George St. Pierre vs Nick Diaz where the championship belt is on the line.
Fight fans know Carlos Condit vs Johny Hendricks is an extremely intriguing match-up. At the same time, we know that any fight with Carlos Condit will be awesomely violent. Pairing him against the man who has made a name for himself by putting opponents to sleep with his “Big Rig” KO punches? Sparks are definitely set to fly.
Urijah Faber is one of the best fighters and best business minds in MMA. He has the foresight to leverage his fame from inside the cage, to growing his fortune outside of it.
Urijah Faber vs Frankie Saenz was likely the most entertaining and intense fight on the UFC194 card. It could have easily won the “fight of the night” honours over Chris Weidman vs Luke Rockhold if the Weidman-Rockhold fight wasn’t a championship fight on the PPV card. During the post-fight press conference, Urijah indicated he would be interested in fighting his former friend TJ Dillashaw or long-time rival Dominic Cruz for the Bantamweight Championship.
But Urijah’s not calling out a championship fight because he wants to be champion. He’s doing it because calling for a title fight means more eyes on Urijah and more advertising for himself and his many businesses. A very wise business man with incredible foresight, Urijah is now fighting to make sure his lucrative business become more successful after his days in the cage are over. And…well…having another championship belt on the wall would make the deal that much better.
Chris Weidman vs Luke Rockhold, UFC 194, 12 December 2015
Fight of the Night
The first championship fight of UFC 194 saw a very competitive and well deserved “fight of the night” for the UFC Middleweight Championship.
What intrigued me most about Chris Weidman vs Luke Rockhold, was how Luke Rockhold was selling and promoting the fight. Leading up to and through the press interviews, Luke said that his momentum could not be stopped, that his fighting abilities were highly underestimated, and that he was on an entirely higher level compared to Chris Weidman.
I admit that I prescribed a “Brad Pitt Syndrome” to Luke Rockhold – that he was too good looking to be actually good at his craft. Luke has fought some tough competition before but I never considered the middleweight division to be that competitive in the first place.
For fight fans, Jacare Souza vs Yoel Romero is just as big of a fight as the ones on the main card of UFC 194. Jacare Souza and Yoel Romero are both legends in their own grappling sport that made the transition to MMA.
Jacare, one of the best BJJ practitioners ever, picked up some striking skills and became a dangerous middleweight fighters. He was the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion with wins of Tim Kennedy, Robbie Lawler, Yushin Okami, and Francis Carmont.
Yoel Romero is one of the best Freestyle Wrestlers ever and has also made a successful transition to MMA. He has adapted his athleticism to striking and has picked up convincing wins against Tim Kennedy and Lyoto Machida.
Fight fans around the world are eager to find out who will become the next middleweight contender when these two grappling legends meet.
