Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz, UFC 47 and UFC 66, April 2004 and December 2006

chuck liddell vs tito ortizThe UFC has built it self into the worlds top MMA promotion through a business model that depends on stars. These MMA stars were the toughest, baddest, craziest guys out there that had an inexplicable passion for the sport. These guys would give up their jobs, spend money and time training, then get into a cage to fight another tough, bad, crazy guy. All of this before fighter salary was decent and before the sport was popular.

Some of the UFC’s stars include Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, and Randy Couture. Old school fighters, legends of the sport, Hall of Fame names. These are the guys that brought MMA to the American audience. These are the guys that provided the foundation for the UFC to build itself into the successful promotion it is today.

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz is a two fight series between two of the top UFC Light Heavyweight fighters of all time. Both are former champions and both are dedicated to winning.

Since UFC 13 in 1997, Tito Ortiz established himself as a tough fighter with a dynamite personality. He joined the UFC with a wrestling background while still in college.

Tito found early success in MMA. Through his spicy personality, he established a rivalry with Lions Den, after defeating Guy Mezger in their second fight in 1999. Lions Den was the popular MMA gym at the time founded by brothers Ken and Frank Shamrock. It was this rivalry that got Tito Ortiz a shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight title against current champion Frank Shamrock in the 1999 Fight of the Year.

However after this fight, Frank Shamrock retired briefly from MMA leaving the Light Heavyweight Title vacant. In 2000, Tito fought Wanderlei Silva for the UFC title and won. Tito Ortiz became the second UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. He had the most successful title defenses in the weight class until recently over taken by Jon Jones.

In total, Tito successfully defended the title 6 times against other MMA legends in Yuki Kondo, Evan Tanner, Vladimir Matyushenko, and Ken Shamrock. On the 7th title defense, he lost it to Randy Couture. The first fight with Chuck Liddell comes about 6 months after losing the belt to Randy. Tito is slowly making the climb back up the hill to a title shot and reclaiming his belt.

Chuck Liddell also started in the UFC around 1998. He built a name for himself with an incredible string of victories against Jeff Monson, Kevin Randleman, Guy Mezger, Murilo Bustamante, Vitor Belfort, and Babalu Sobral. During this time, Pride was the premiere MMA promotion. In order to build their presence and credibility in the MMA world, the UFC challenged Pride. Best of the UFC versus the best of Pride.

The firs time a UFC vs Pride match happened was in 2001 with Chuck Liddell beating Guy Mezger in Japan. The second was when the UFC pushed for Chuck to fight Wanderlei Silva. Truly the best of Pride versus the best of the UFC at the time. Although this fight never happened, in 2003, Chuck flew to Japan to enter the 2003 Middleweight Grand Prix Tournament. Wanderlei Silva was also in the tournament. If both fighters did well, they would meet each other in the Finals.

During the tournament, Chuck made an impressive show of skill and heart in defeating dutch kick boxer Alistair Overeem. However Chuck was defeated by Pride star Quinton Rampage Jackson. Despite the loss, Chuck showed the world that the UFC had quality MMA fighters and the UFC was ready to take the MMA world by storm.

Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz I in 2004 was the first fight Chuck had since returning from Japan. In the US, Chuck would continue with his winning ways and capturing the Light Heavyweight title by defeating Randy Couture in 2005. Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz II in 2006 was Chucks 4th title defense.
