When the UFC first put together the fight Fabricio Werdum vs Roy Nelson, I thought that this would be an incredible grappling match. Roy Nelson may have the advantage due to having the grappling ability to defend against Werdum, but also incredible knockout power.

Both Fabricio Werdum and Roy Nelson are accomplished grapplers. In fact, both fighters competed at ADCC 2003 in the +99kg category. Werdum and Nelson would have met in the semi finals. However Nelson lost his quarter final match to Mike Van Arsdale. Werdum went on to defeat Van Arsdale however lost to Marcio Pe De Pano. Click here for the full results.
Since then, Roy Nelson established himself in the MMA world as the IFL Heavyweight Champion. In 2009, he won season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter Rashad vs Rampage by knocking out Brendan Schaub. Since becoming The Ultimate Fighter, Roy Nelson has a 2-2 record in the UFC with wins over Stefan Struve and Cro Cop but losses against Junior Dos Santos and Frank Mir.
Fabricio Werdum on the other hand reached global fame in submitting Fedor Emelianenko. Although he fought in Pride, he didn’t make his mark in the MMA world until this submission. He subsequently took a year off. Upon his return, he lost of Alistair Overeem in the first round of the 2011 Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.
Fabricio Werdum vs Roy Nelson is Fabricio’s first fight after coming back to the UFC. A good match up to test Fabricio’s MMA skills especially given Roy Nelson’s strong grappling background and dangerous knock out punches.

In the second round, Werdum opens up a nasty cut over Roy’s right eye.
