Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Valerie Letourneau, UFC 193, 15 November 2015
Fight fans around the world have come to love and adore Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Not just for her straight talk and her no-bullshit personality. We love her for her aggressive, focused, and unforgiving style in the ring. A true product of hard training and single minded devotion to her craft.
Valerie Letourneau valiantly entered the ring against this menacing Muay Thai fighter and the result was a very competitive fight. Joanna’s aggression and discipline shone through while Valerie proved her tough and unbreaking will.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk has proven to be a dominating champion. She defeated the wrestler Carla Esparza in a devastating fashion to win the belt. In her first defense of the belt, she brutalized a well-rounded and experienced Jessica Penne. With Valerie, we see Joanna face a larger opponent with a striking background.
When Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Valerie Letouneau ended, Joe Rogan and other labelled it as a competitive fight. In my opinion, it wasn’t at all Joanna was clearly the better fighter. She was more aggressive, got to the punch first, had better exit plans, capitalized on openings to execute combinations, and showed her experience and abilities as a kickboxing champion. The key to Joanna’s victory was her unrelenting persistence on landing the right kick to Valerie’s left leg. At the end of the fight, fight metrics reported that Joanna had landed 60 leg kicks, the majority of them likely landing on Valerie’s tenderized, pulverized, exorcised left thigh.
The reason why it can be seen as a competitive fight was the sheer toughness and will from Valerie. She kept moving and showed no weakness despite the number of strikes and leg kicks Joanna was landing. Joanna’s speed and aggression would frustrate any fighter and cause them to lose confidence and give up a knockout opportunity. But Valerie stayed mentally strong and endured through to the end of the fight. Despite her being tough, there wasn’t any instance in the fight where it seemed like she had a solution to Joanna’s accuracy and power. Valerie Letorneau isn’t that great of a fighter, but she deserves her chance to make a good living based on her toughness and her durability.
As for Joanna Jedrzejczyk? Believe the next fight that fans are screaming for is a rematch against Claudia Gadelha. When Joanna first started MMA, she was dominating her opponents. Claudia was the first one to come closest to beating Joanna. The fight resulted in a split decision.
We can look forward to Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Claudia Gadelha, but in the meantime, lets enjoy the magnificently brutal and spine-chilling focus on Joanna Jedrzejczyk slowly but surely picking apart Valerie Letourneau.
