Nick Diaz vs Marius Zaromskis, Strikeforce Miami, 30 January 2010
Nick Diaz won the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship when he was 26 in Nick Diaz vs Marius Zaromskis. What was I doing when I was 26? A corporate desk jockey wondering if I was making the most of every moment while sitting in the waiting room of life, waiting for the inevitable.
The Diaz brothers have long been among my favourite fighters. Their don’t-give-a-shit attitude with their middle fingers to the law is for the cameras. Underneath the thin thorny surface are caring, kind individuals who have a deep respect for the fight game.
Not to mention that awesomely effective and intriguing to watch Stockton Slap. Nate Diaz used it incredibly effectively in his fights against Gray Maynard and Donald Cerrone. Now we get to see Nick’s Stockston Slap effectively used to finish the fight in Nick Diaz vs Marius Zaromskis.
Marius Zaromskis is an awesome fighter with a plethora of experience. A true veteran of the sport, he has had fights against Che Mils, Hayato Sakurai, Jason High, Evangelista Santos, Waachiim Spiritwolf, and Jordan Mein. He has fought under multiple promotions including Cage Rage, Dream, Strikeforce, and Bellator. He was the first Dream Welterweight Champion.
Hoping to continue his success at Dream, he fights in the USA for the first time under the Strikeforce banner. In Nick Diaz vs Marius Zaromskis, Marius competes with Nick to be the first Strikeforce Welterweight Champion.
By the time Nick is 26, he has firmly established himself as one of the top welterweight fighters in the world. From his rough upbringing to becoming the star pupil of Cesar Gracie, Nick’s story is well known to fight fans and has put Lodi on the map.
Coming into this fight Nick was a former WEC Welterweight Champion, a status he achieved at the age of 20. He vacated the title to fight in the UFC. In the UFC he experienced a volatile career with consecutive wins and consecutive losses. It was also during this time where he traveled to Japan to land the historical Gogoplata against Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 at lightweight.
Due to contract negotiation difficulties, Nick Diaz left the UFC and briefly fought in Elite XC. In 2009, Nick Diaz landed in Strikeforce where he found world class opponents and fight fans found intriguing match-ups. Nick Diaz won his first two fights, the first against MMA legend Frank Shamrock, and the second against a tough knock out artist in Scott Smith.
Nick Diaz earned the opportunity to fight for the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship against then Dream Welterweight Champion Marius Zaromskis.
Nick Diaz vs Marius Zaromskis was an incredible back and forth battle. Although the fight is only one round, both fighters had each other in trouble. At the time, the fight world was relatively unfamiliar with Marius could do and thought it would be an easy fight for Diaz.
Don’t miss a moment of the action in this fight as the two battle it out on the feet and on the ground. At the end of the fight, us Diaz fans are treated to some beautiful pitter patter punches.
