Robbie Lawler vs Carlos Condit, UFC 195, 2 January 2016
Fight of the Night
I often wonder what makes a good fight. One that is worthy of fight fans appreciation. One that is worthy of fight of the year accolades. There may not be a set list of requirements, but it often involves skilled fighters who are willing to leave it all in the ring. We have just that with Robbie Lawler vs Carlos Condit.
Carlos Condit is a crafty and intelligent fighter who uses awkward angles to execute deadly and insistent combinations. Robbie Lawler is a durable veteran who has the patience and the chin to weather the combinations in order to deliver powerful combinations of his own.
A phenomenal fight that is receiving “fight of the year” for 2016 mentions already. Whether you are a fight fan or not, do not miss Robbie Lawler vs Carlos Condit, scroll to the bottom of this entry for the full fight video.
Carlos Condit and Robbie Lawler are both known to be tough fighters who are willing to engage in a bloody battle in the cage. When you put these two in a fight against each other, you get an awesome display of skill and violence.
Carlos Condit is known to be a very crafty fighter that will use your own skills against you. His famous fight against Nick Diaz shows exactly how much of a frustrating fighter he could be to fight against. Carlos knew that Nick Diaz’s key to victory lied in his ability to execute his “Stockton Slap”. Getting hit enough times with these overwhelming and accurate pillow punches will eventually drain your body and cause a fighter to lose his fighting spirit. Carlos Condit executed a very strategic game plan to counter this. Take Nick Diaz down or get out of Nick Diaz’s range. Many Nick Diaz fans (including myself) could interpret this as Condit running away from the fight. But in reality, it was a brilliant fight plan against a dangerous fighter.
In his fight against Dan Hardy, we see that Carlos Condit has the ability to knock his opponent out with what may be the most famous left hook in the UFC Welterweight division by now, thanks to all the promotional videos for UFC 195 and Carlos Condit highlight reels. From his fights against Martin Kampmann, Johny Hendricks, George St Pierre, Matt Brown, Rory MacDonald…and I guess almost every other opponent, we see a monster that craves for a brutal fight, just for the fun of it.
Carlos Condit comes from the previous generation of mixed martial artists. Fighters who aren’t afraid to engage and who revel in a bloody battle. Robbie Lawler so happens to come from the exact same place. A long-time veteran of the sport, Robbie Lawler was well knock for is aggression and his knock out power. He was an incredibly exciting fighter to watch as he won most of his fights with finishes.
Robbie Lawer was part o the UFC when the UFC was still in double digits. He has wins over Tiki Ghosn and Chris Lytle. He has losses against Pete Spratt, Nick Diaz, and Evan Tanner. Yes, that’s how long Robbie Lawler has been fighting. These guys are all retired except one.
Over the years, Robbie Lawler has evolved from being a explosive dynamite fighter to having more patience and finding the right opportunity to execute his deadly combinations. This is exactly the patience that is needed to weather the crafty strategy that Carlos would put together for his fights. Robbie also has the right amount of power, aggression, and speed to close the distance and pose a huge danger to Carlos’s intelligent game plan.
The first few rounds could be called even. Carlos Condit scored a knockdown in the first round but Robbie took him down. Robbie scored a knockdown in the second round but Carlos Condit might have won the third round with sheer volume of strikes and aggression. Carlos scored awesome combinations that nearly won him the fight in the fourth with Robbie coming back with explosive haymakers and deadly violent combinations in the fifth. All in all an absolutely incredible fight. Some may call it a very close fight. The score card is available here, but I encourage you…No I implore you, watch the fight to judge for yourself!
