Robbie Lawler vs Rory MacDonald II, UFC 189, July 2015
Fight of the Night
In my previous post, I mentioned that Conor McGregor vs Chad Mendes was the most suspenseful fight of the evening. But Robbie Lawler vs Rory MacDonald might have been the best fight of the evening.
In a main card full of bloody wars that tested fighters skills and heart, Robbie Lawler vs Rory MacDonald proved to be the most bloody and the most testing. A fight that showed the fight world just exactly what happens when fighters get pushed to the brink where their training kicks into auto-pilot and heart and the will-to-win take over.
It’s been a long time coming for Rory MacDonald. He has been a top UFC Welterweight contender for a long time, training and competing in the shadow of the legendary Georges St. Pierre. He has proven himself to be one of the best welterweights on the planet by defeating almost every single top welterweight in the UFC. The only notable welterweights he has not defeated are Nick Diaz, Johny Hendricks, GSP, and Robbie Lawler.
It is unfortunate that such a talented fighter has been met with such difficult opponents in such a ferocious weight class. The first time Rory MacDonald was ready for a title fight, his team mate Georges St. Pierre still wore the crown. At the time the topic of team mate vs team mate was relatively a hot topic and this was easily avoidable in the welterweight division when there were so many more interesting title match-ups to make. Besides, Rory was defeated by Carlos Condit. Carlos Condit was the former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and that would be great UFC Championship fight.
When Rory MacDonald lost to Carlos Condit, he had to start all over again. He defeated top guys like Nate Diaz, Mike Pyle, Che Mills, BJ Penn and Jake Ellenberger. Then he was defeated by Robbie Lawler. Following this loss, Rory had to prove himself again! He went through more top welterweights like Demian Maia, Tyron Woodley, and Tarec Saffeidine. There are almost no more welterweights left for Rory to fight!
Finally Rory gets a title shot against Robbie Lawler and the results are phenomenal. Years of frustration of not having his day in the light against a Champion that lives for the violence. Rory is usually a shy pensive fighter that uses his length to pick his opponents apart. Robbie Lawler seems to enjoy getting hit but thankfully enjoys hitting other people more.
In Robbie Lawler vs Rory MacDonald, we see the momentum shift multiple times. Both fighters are battered, shattered, and bloodied. Both fighters dig deep but it is Rory that succumbs to the pain and gives out first.
Some could say this is a tragic story of frustration and disappointment. Some could say that it’s not worth putting yourself through that mental and physical torture. At the end of the day, this is fighting. A test of a combination of skill and heart. And boy did we get a good showing of that in Robbie Lawler vs Rory MacDonald.
