Darren Elkins vs Mirsad Bektic, UFC 209, 4 March 2017
Fight of the Night
Darren Elkins might not be a super star in the sport, but he is definitely one of the toughest. To me, he has become akin to the likes of Scott Jorgensen, Eddie Wineland, and Brad Pickett. Fighters who are extremely talented and accomplished but for one reason or another, simply haven’t been able to break into the upper echelon of their weight divisions. Darren Elkins vs Mirsad Bektic unfortunately isn’t going to help in Darren’s bid for a UFC title shot and MMA stardom, but it does speak volumes to how much heart and experience Darren has.
Dominick Cruz vs Cody Garbrandt, UFC 207, 30 Dec 2016
Fight of the Night
The great Urijah Faber will go down in MMA history as a legend of the sport. He paved the way for the great lighter weight fighters we know and love today. He made being 150 pounds and under cool when the fight industry was dominated by 200+ pound wrestlers. As legends are created, they also need to come to an end. Urijah Faber lost his WEC Featherweight belt and the belt changed hands multiple times before going to another great Featherweight fighter, Jose Aldo. Before he left the ring, Urijah Faber and his Team Alpha Male made one of the greatest rivalries in the sport against Dominick Cruz.
Time and time again, Team Alpha Male came up short against what seemed to be an allusive fighter with a unique style that couldn’t be deciphered. Urijah Faber, Joseph Benevidez, TJ Dillashaw. All the top guys from Team Alpha Male all came up short. Tonight, at UFC 207, we witness history in the making and perhaps one of the greatest moments in Team Alpha Male history if not MMA history. Cody Garbrant, a long time disciple of Urijah Faber, finds victory over Dominick cruz in one of the most incredible Bantamweight fights.
TJ Dillashaw vs Dominick Cruz, UFC Fight Night, 17 January 2016
Fight of the Night
TJ Dillashaw vs Dominick Cruz is finally here. One of my most highly anticipated fights this year. Two kings of footwork and movement. Both winning their belts and establishing their names in MMA with awkward strikes and unexpected angles. Dominick Cruz, the one that paved the way, versus TJ Dillashaw, the one that learned and improved on.
This is the kind of fight that didn’t just capture my attention, but captured my entire consciousness from beginning to end. I might have even forgot to breath as my brain melted into the screen – that’s how grossly engrossed I became.
Urijah Faber is one of the best fighters and best business minds in MMA. He has the foresight to leverage his fame from inside the cage, to growing his fortune outside of it.
Urijah Faber vs Frankie Saenz was likely the most entertaining and intense fight on the UFC194 card. It could have easily won the “fight of the night” honours over Chris Weidman vs Luke Rockhold if the Weidman-Rockhold fight wasn’t a championship fight on the PPV card. During the post-fight press conference, Urijah indicated he would be interested in fighting his former friend TJ Dillashaw or long-time rival Dominic Cruz for the Bantamweight Championship.
But Urijah’s not calling out a championship fight because he wants to be champion. He’s doing it because calling for a title fight means more eyes on Urijah and more advertising for himself and his many businesses. A very wise business man with incredible foresight, Urijah is now fighting to make sure his lucrative business become more successful after his days in the cage are over. And…well…having another championship belt on the wall would make the deal that much better.
Rose Namajunas vs Paige VanZant, UFC Fight Night, 10 December 2015
So many times we ask ourselves, “What makes a good fighter?”. Is it an undefeated professional record? Is it awesome technique? Is it incredible knockout power? What about heart, toughness, athleticism, or cardio?
In Rose Namjunas vs Paige VanZant, we have the perfect story and example of technique versus toughness. Both girls are young and new to the fight world. Both are tough fighters from a tough background. Over the short period of being professional fighters, Rose has added technique to her toughness while Paige still only seems like she’s just plain tough.
TJ Dillashaw vs Renan Barao 2, UFC on Fox 16, 25 July 2015
It is surprising to see how far TJ Dillashaw has come since his time on season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2011. At the time, he was a baby-faced wrestler that was determined to be champion. A cute kind of determination that you admired, knowing that there is a high probability he might not do that well.
Little did I know that TJ Dillashaw had two things in his pocket. Two things that no one else has, and few people will ever find. Flow and Renan Barao’s number.
Women bring the passion and the power to MMA. Since the days of Marloes Coenen, Cristiane Justino, Gina Carano. I have always thought that women fight with more ferocity, more heart and more hunger. Paige Vanzant vs Felice Herrig was no exception. Sat down, turned on UFC on Fox 15 and was completely blown away by the absolutely amazing action from Paige Vanzant vs Felice Herrig.
